During WWII the members of the Army Corps of Engineers increased by 4000%. It can be said that the Army, if nothing, is big on planning. Someone making those plans certainly had the foresight to believe that this specialized branch of combat operations would be called upon to build or rebuild some 3000 bridges in a 20-month span during the Italian campaign.
