The Winter Line Stories

Real-life accounts of the unheralded heros of the Italian Campaign of WWII

This article originally was published in June, 1945 in the "Saturday Evening Post." This would be the final chapter of my Grandfather's military career as a Public Affairs and Intelligence Officer. This is a bittersweet account of soldiers going Home. Jubilation of seeing stateside family and friends mixed with sadness of fallen comrades were the daily ebb and flow of emotions. Travel was not quick nor particularly luxurious, but it was probably the most life-reflective for those making the journey.

This scanned page is taken directly from the original story. The entire transcript of the story along with commentary will be in the published version of "Winterline Stories"
